For instance, we use trolling and drifting fishing techniques to fish for salmon practically all year round. We do this by following the salmon through the year as they migrate from freshwater to saltwater and back again. Pacific Salmon lay their eggs in freshwater rivers and streams, so the baby fish are hatched there. The baby fish stay in the freshwater streams until they are big enough to migrate, and then they swim downstream to the Pacific Ocean, where they grow to maturity. Then it migrates back upstream to the place where it was hatched. It lays its eggs there, and the cycle begins again. Other fish cannot be fished all year. Tuna season happens during the annual tuna migration north, July through October. We sail our very fastest boats to the tuna migration areas 40 to 80 miles offshore. Crab season is in the winter, from November to January. During our crab fishing trips, we also fish for rock cod and other rock-dwelling fish while we are waiting for the crab traps to fill up.
